Linda passed away in 1997 as a result of Multiple Sclerosis.
Born in 1943 Linda was the youngest of the Winterborn children. After leaving school she worked for Horace & Williams where she stayed for many years. As you can see Linda was a bit of a beauty and entered a local beauty competition in 1966. The Brighton & Hove Herald on this story quoted her ambition as ‘to attend the Olympic Games’ and cited her hobbies as dancing and bowling. Linda was a greatly loved daughter, sister and aunt. A lovely lady and we still miss her.
Doris – her beloved older sister – passed away in September 2002. She had spent many years, with other members of the family, helping raise money for those with Multiple Sclerosis and helping her sister cope with the disease. Doris was a greatly loved
daughter wife, mother, sister and aunt who lived for her family. Born in 1938 Doris left school and became a wages clerk for the Southdown Bus Company. She married John in 1967 and they started a family. A compulsive walker of dogs and children (!!) she was always flying around Patcham and Brighton at the speed of light with the dogs or/and children in tow!! For several years she spent much time working at, and raising money for, Lewes FC. It wasn’t her only sporting achievement for Doris won a Southdown Bus Company staff tennis championship during her employment and in her younger years she loved to ski. A wonderful woman and sadly missed by us all.
When the Winterborns’ and Shipps’ decided to set up a fund after the death of Doris – to raise money in her and Linda’s memory – it seemed a natural choice to raise money for those who suffered from MS.
We help raise much needed money for the Sussex Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Centre (based in Southwick) which provides treatment and support for those with MS in Sussex. “Multiple Sclerosis, MS, is a disease which affects the nervous system. As yet we do not know how to cure MS but extensive research is being done on its cause and treatment”. “Meanwhile, those affected have to come to terms with their situation, and find ways in which to cope with lifestyles that may have radically changed.” “At the Sussex MS centre we understand the worry, confusion, uncertainty and anger that people may feel when they are told they have MS. Contact with others in the same position can help them cope with these emotions”. The Sussex MS Treatment centre is run on a self-help basis by people with MS, their families and carers. Our members can take advantage of the range of therapies available at the centre, or they can just come in for a chat and light refreshments” “We are aware that carers and close family need support too, so everyone is welcome.” For more information about the Sussex Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Centre visit their web site at www.mssussex.com SO LET THE FUNDRAISING COMMENCE !!!!! In April 2004 we held an ‘old skool reunion’ for those who left Patcham First in 1980, Patcham Middle in 1984 or Maggie Aggie/Fawcett in 1988. It was held at Patcham Middle School Hall. It was tremendous - 40 old boys and girls turned out for an evening of Wham, Duran Duran and even a little bit of Fun Boy Three!!. We ate Salt & Shake, Club biscuits and drank Um Bungo !!!! We even had an 1980’s tombola. Oh and we participated in a proper drink or two (ish)!
Some comments: “Just wanted to say thanks for last night. I really enjoyed it and it was lovely to see you and other familiar faces” “Just wanted to say thanks v much for organising the reunion on Saturday. I had such a laugh catching up with everyone.
