HBO Therapy

At the Sussex MS Centre we have been providing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for over 25 years.

We have a Multi-Place Chamber, which sits up to 5 people per session.

Our chamber is run by a team of dedicated trained volunteer operators, and is open 6 days a week, plus two evenings a week.

We treat adults and children with a range of different health conditions. If you would like to find out more about HBO Therapy for your condition please contact us at the centre for advice.

Our Chamber Sessions cost:

£10 for centre members, with long term on going treatment.

£25 for non members on a one off course of treatment.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves giving the body extra oxygen.Hyper meaning increased and baric referring to the changes in Pressure.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy raises the oxygen in the body up to 1000% through the increased pressure of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber.

The therapy is given to people in a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber; the patient breathes the oxygen through a mask or hood, whilst the pressure on the inside of the chamber is changed to that on the outside.

The more the pressure is increased, the more oxygen the patient’s body is able to saturate in to his or her system.

The extra oxygen taken into the body during HBO therapy assists the body in the area’s where the healing is slowed down by infection or where blood supply is limited by damage to the tissues.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can help reduce swelling and inflammation, promotes healing to infected or slow healing areas, and works as an immune modulator, assisting the body in fighting off viruses and bad bacteria. It also encourages new blood vessels to grow and carry additional blood.

Hyperbaric Oxygen for Multiple Sclerosis

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment in MS can be used to stabilize the condition and improve the patient’s quality of life.

Research shows that in the type of inflammation which is typical of Multiple Sclerosis the transportation of oxygen is limited by the tissue swelling. There can be a severe lack of oxygen in the affected areas during “MS Flair”. If HBO therapy is undertaken it can help reduce the swelling and prevent further scarring or plaque formation.

Patients have reported improvement in numbness in the fingers and hands, in balance, walking, pain, fatigue, weakness, dizziness and improvement with visual fields. It is also constantly reported that the therapy improves bladder and bowel disorders.

Hyperbaric Oxygen for Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injuries

Hyperbaric oxygen can be used for chronic stroke and traumatic brain injury patients by helping them to regenerate, repair and generate new blood vessels into the injured parts of the brain.

The pressurised chamber forces oxygen into all areas of the body, resulting in a re-awakening of dormant areas of the brain that are prevalent in people who have suffered from a stroke.

This can help to improve, walking, speech, strength, balance, co-ordination and other areas that may have been affected by the stroke.

Hyperbaric Oxygen for Lyme’s Disease

Hyperbaric Therapy has been used frequently over the past few years as a treatment for Lyme’s Disease.

Borrielia Burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme’s Disease, dies in the presence of abundant oxygen.

Hyperbaric Oxgen helps by reducing pain, modulating the immune system, it increases energy, alleviates sleep problems and reduces cognitive impairment.

Hyperbaric Oxygen for Cancer

Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy is used to treat a number of side effects caused by cancer treatments such as radiotherapy.

Hyperbaric Oxygen can help with healing post radiotherapy wounds such as necrosis to the jaw or the neck.

The increased oxygen in the body during and after a Hyperbaric Oxygen treatment can increase the speed of the healing in the tissues of the affected area’s by regenerating and growing new blood vessels.

The Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment is also sometimes given before reconstructive surgery as it can help fight infection, assist natural healing and promote new blood vessels to grow and form new bone.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Autism

Using hyperbaric oxygen treatments increases the cerebral blood flow and so oxygen is delivered to parts of the brain which are thought to be oxygen deficient in people with Autism.

The Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment, when used to help with autism, improves receptive language, eye contact, irritability, hyperactivity and speech.

Hyper Baric Oxygen Treatment for Wound Care

Hyper Baric Oxygen Treatment is used when all other conventional types of wound care show no measurable signs of improvement.

The treatment increases the amount of oxygen being carried by the blood to the organs and tissues helping to initiate and establish micro vascularisation, it’s also known to enhance the work of some anti biotic and help the white blood cells fight infection.

Hyper Baric Oxygen for Sports Injury/ Broken Bones

The time it takes to recover from joint, muscle, and tendon injuries can be reduced by up to 70% when people are treated with a Hyper Baric Oxygen Chamber.

The oxygen levels within the body tissues is increased through the treatment, and allows the body to produce new body tissues and cells. It regenerates them around the affected parts of the body. The immunity of the body increases and the pain and swelling of the infected area’s is reduced.

The higher concentration of oxygen that can reach the blood supply, organs and injured muscle and bone tissue, damaged tendons and joints, the better the body can naturally heal itself at a much faster rate.

The Hyperbaric Oxygen treatment can help reduce swelling and pain, stop Hypoxia of the affected tissues, reduce scar tissue, and speed up healing of tissues and fractures.

Recovery times are reduced, performance is improved and endurance is enhanced.

Hyper Baric Oxygen Treatment for Compartment Syndrome

Hyperbaric Oxygen treatment is used for Compartment Syndrome when the patient is showing signs of pain and tense compartment weakness.

Hyper Baric Oxygen Treatment can reduce complications in sever cases, it increases oxygen delivery to the injured tissues, reduces swelling, inflammation and provides an environment for healing and fighting infection.

Hyperbaric Oxygen for ME/CFS

Studies show that reduced blood flow, especially in the brain, is common in M.E/CFS.

Other Scientific Studies have pointed to impaired oxygen delivery and consumption levels in the muscles of ME or CFS patients.

Hyperbaric Oxygen could be helpful in delivering oxygen to oxygen deficient parts of the body. However there have currently only been limited studies into the long term use of Hyperbaric Oxygen for ME/CFS patients.

ME/CFS patients who have used Hyper Baric Oxygen Treatment have reported improvement in concentration, energy levels and sleeping patterns.
