Information for Carers
There are many dedicated Carers who look after the members who come to the Centre. We extend a warm welcome to them and hold occasional get togethers allowing them to network, share good practice & ideas & generally have a good chat!
The last meeting took place on 30 September when about 14 Carers joined Centre manager Penny Peters along with Ruth Schofield, one of our volunteers, and a guest from the Care Agency Crossroads, Alison Grinyer.
After tea & cakes were served there was an opportunity for the group to discuss various issues which affect most Carers.
The following list gives some contact names and addresses which may be useful to all using this website. Penny also reminded the group that, as a Carer of a Centre member, they are entitled to join in their own right & therefore take part in the social and therapeutic activities offered here. Membership application forms & details can be found on this website.
Crossroads Care Agency can help with day to day care & emergency respite care (Tel. 01273 234021) for those in the Brighton Hove & East Sussex areas or for West Sussex & parts of Hampshire (Tel. 01903 790270 ). In certain circumstances overnight live-in care can be provided.
Revitalise offers full respite care for people with varying degrees of disability. The one at Netley near Southampton has been used by members here who speak well of the care given and the interesting days out provided from the comfortable base there. The website gives full details of Netley & their other locations throughout the UK.
Benefits .At the Centre here there is a team who can help complete the sometimes complex benefit forms which you will be asked to complete if you are claiming a state benefit as a result of being unable to work. Please contact us and ask to be referred.
Sally Slugg, who, with her husband Barry – for whom she cares – is a member of the Direct payments Customer & Carer group. Sally can help you find out more about Direct payments & their purposes. She also recommended an advocacy service & other advice offered through Independent Lives based in Worthing (Tel. 01903 219482) Sally can be contacted via the Centre.
Sharon White another member of our Carers network gave details of an excellent holiday she shared with her daughter at The Grove Hotel East Cliff Bournemouth ( Tel. 01202 552233 ) The Grove Hotel describe themselves as “A holiday retreat for cancer patients & others with long-term or life-threatening illnesses. Carers, families and friends are all welcome.”
Here is a document with some more details of accessible holiday suggestions.
The Centre recently had a visit from a representative of Brighton & Hove Buses to introduce their “Helping Hand Scheme” a series of cards which alert bus drivers to the needs of people with disabilities. The company also run another scheme which will arrange for a wheelchair user to have a taxi if the dedicated space on the bus is not available.
These are a few of the many ideas and examples of help available, which we all may have as Centre members so if you can share information which has helped you or your family please contact the Centre so that we can add it to this site.
